Areas of Focus
New Musical Expression. As music transforms from being the art of notes to being the art of sound, the computer becomes central because no other instrument is theoretically capable of mapping arbitrary behaviors and data streams to arbitrary sounds. New relationships are being explored between audiences, performers, instruments, composers and music.
Affiliation-  We are closely affiliated with the Center for the Arts at NUS. Besides being responsible for the arts activity at the University Cultural Center, running the NUS museums and organizing many student groups in Dance, Music, and other arts. The CFA also plans to host our Lab space.
Media Creativity Tools. Emerging artistic genres require the development of suitable tools and systems to support creative "authoring" - whether the authoring is done by human beings, autonomous machines, or by people and machines in real-time creative collaboration.
Arts and Creativity Lab Space -  Still new and only virtual, we are planning space for the Lab the 3rd floor mezzanine of the University Cultural Center. Here is a visualization of the space and a description of available resources.
Understanding Aesthetic Experience. What do "new media" modes of expression, new types of engagement between creators and consumers of art, and new tools for artistic creation mean for the experience of art? We investigate the issues using a variety of behavioral and brain imaging techniques.
Visiting Artists -  Through a variety of avenues (ISEA 2008 Artists-in-Residences, collaborations, visiting appointments), we make resources available to artists. Potential resources include IDMI technologies, CFA student arts groups (subject to exam and vacation schedules!), and the wonderful collection of South and South East Asian artifacts owned by the NUS Museums.
Artist Studio. At the core of our research is the actual practice of the arts.
Activities -  We support artists, researchers and students in the creation of media art and technology. We also host seminars and workshops.
