Chairman, Management Board's Message

Welcome to the website of Interactive & Digital Media Institute (IDMI)!

IDMI was officially set up as a research institute in NUS, on 23 April 2007. With the strong support of various Faculties, the Institute has become operational right away with 8 cross-disciplinary laboratories, namely the Arts & Creativity Lab, Ambient Intelligence Lab, Games Lab, Mixed Reality Lab, Multimedia Sensing Lab, Multimodal Analysis Lab, Social & Cognitive Lab, and Social Robotics Lab.

With an initial seed grant from NUS and the success of a number of research grant awards from the NRF-IDM 1st Call for Proposals, the IDMI is in a good position to launch a portfolio of exciting cross-disciplinary projects that will be carried out in collaboration with numerous international collaborators.

We are on track to set up new joint research activities with the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Keio University. Joint research activities with other prestigious overseas institutions are in discussion.

The IDMI has also established the NUS Hollywood Lab, which is an outpost that monitors and coordinates internship immersion programmes to IDMI researchers and top NUS students in prestigious companies/laboratories in the Los Angeles-Hollywood area. This is an excellent chance for NUS researchers and students to experience the pulse of IDM research in Tinseltown, the centre of blockbuster movie industry.

This webpage has information on seminars to be presented by reputable professors invited by IDMI, in which your attendance is most welcome. Do look out for such announcements regularly. There are also many interesting and cutting edge research projects from each of the 8 IDMI laboratories that you can find from their webpage links.

Starting 3 March, 2008, Dr Ryohei Nakatsu from Japan has become the Founding Director of IDMI. The Management Board will give full support to Dr. Nakatsu to develop IDMI rapidly into a flagship of NUS and a global centre of excellence in IDM research!
